SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide, D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, that binds the inner-mitochondrial-membrane phospholipid cardiolipin. It has been studied in cell and animal models of ischaemia-reperfusion injury and in clinical trials in mitochondrial disease. SS-31 is supplied as a lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder in a sealed vial, in 10 mg, 30 mg and 50 mg sizes, priced RM 135–380. SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide, D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, that binds the inner-mitochondrial-membrane phospholipid cardiolipin. It has been studied in cell and animal models of ischaemia-reperfusion injury and in clinical trials in mitochondrial disease.
SS-31 has been reported to bind cardiolipin with high affinity, inhibit cytochrome c peroxidase activity, protect cristae structure and support ATP recovery after ischaemia in rat kidney studies.
In September 2025 elamipretide (Forzinity) received US accelerated approval for use to improve muscle strength in Barth syndrome patients weighing 30 kg or more, and it is in phase 3 development for other indications.
