Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide classified as a growth hormone secretagogue (a ghrelin-receptor agonist). It has been studied in rodent and swine pharmacology models, in healthy-volunteer pharmacokinetics and in a phase 2 trial in postoperative ileus.
Stimulates growth hormone release through a GHRP-like (ghrelin) receptor; in swine it did not raise ACTH or cortisol above GHRH-stimulated levels, unlike GHRP-6 and GHRP-2 (Raun 1998).
Investigational; phase 2 postoperative-ileus trials (NCT00672074, NCT01280344, Helsinn) are completed and no marketing authorisation was identified.
